Natural Herbal Products for Skin Irritation

Irritated or damaged skin can be treated cheaply, safely and easily with products you may already have at home. Unlike commercial products that often contain chemicals or artificial fragrances, natural herbal remedies won't further irritate already sensitive skin. Besides providing relief for skin irritations, use of natural herbal products will also give skin a healthier appearance.

Olive Oil
Eczema and psoriasis outbreaks can be soothed using olive oil. Assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, Christopher Dannaker, M.D., advises using one teaspoon of olive oil per one square inch of affected skin. Unlike commercial moisturizers that contain olive oil, pure olive oil contains no chemicals that could further irritate damaged skin.
Mineral Water
Applying a mist or mineral water can soothe burns, rashes or red, itchy skin. Trace minerals in the water act as anti-inflammatories and can provide relief after laser skin resurfacing.

Salt and Neem
Acne can be treated by scrubbing your face with coarse salt and a few drops of neem oil. Salt is a natural antiseptic and neem oil (available at health stores) has antifungal properties. A mask of plain yogurt can be applied afterward for 15 to 30 minutes. The lactic acid in the yogurt acts as an exfoliant and gives skin a natural glow. Yogurt also clears acne, fine lines and discoloration of the skin.
Tomatoes
Vitamins A and C in tomatoes support healthy skin. Tomato juice is a natural astringent and the acidic properties rid the skin of oil. Tomatoes also contain antioxidants that fight free radicals. Use tomatoes daily to rid your skin of acne and blemishes. Liberally apply the pulp of the tomato to your face and rinse off with warm water after one hour.
Crushed Aspirin
Use an aspirin paste to treat mosquito bites. Crush a low-dose aspirin and mix with an ounce of water and apply. Aspirin is a natural anti-inflammatory and reduces redness and swelling associated with bites, stings, acne and ingrown hairs.

Herbal Soap
Soaps containing German chamomile, ginger or echinacea are effective treatments for mosquito bites. These herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that relieve itching and swelling when the soap is rubbed on the bites.

Tea
The phytonutrients in green or black tea work to reduce inflamed blood vessels after a minor burn. Apply by soaking a dish towel in cold tea and using as a cold compress.

Tomato Juice and Buttermilk
Due to the natural cooling effects of each, tomato juice and buttermilk are mixed together to relieve and reduce the effects of sunburn. Mix two teaspoons of tomato juice and four tablespoons of buttermilk and apply. Leave mixture on affected skin for 30 minutes.
