Emu Oil Benefits

Emu oil claims to cure many conditions including arthritis, psoriasis and sunburn. But despite the fact that researchers across the globe are studying its makeup and benefits, emu oil is still largely unheard of by the modern Western population. Each day, we're learning more about what emu oil is, how it works and most important, what its benefits are.

History

The Australian aborigines have been using emu oil for hundreds, possibly even thousands of years for various purposes, including treatment for burns, bruises, joint pain, insect bites, sunburn and more. In fact, it was first introduced to Europeans as a natural sunscreen and skin moisturizer, but it wasn't popularized until relatively recently, when an article by Dr. Peter Ghosh published his findings about emu oil in the Australian Post in 1988.

What's In It

Emu oil comes from the back fat of emus, so there's a lot of fatty acids including omega-6 and omega-3. The largest component however, is oleic acid--a mono-unsaturated fatty acid. Because emu oil is lacking in phospholipids, it penetrates human skin rather easily, a characteristic that popularized its use as a topical analgesic. It also contains Vitamins A and E, known for helping maintain the skin.
Purposes

Emu oil websites claim that emu oil cures everything from arthritis to hair loss. It may not be the cure-all some people want you to think it is, but emu oil has been found to be beneficial in its use as an anti-inflammatory, for treatment of sunburns, as an anti-aging cream (its consistency and texture are more creamy than oily) and can even help reduce stretch marks.

Benefits Over OTC/Prescription Creams

Some of emu oil's best traits are the ones least talked about. Assuming that the researchers who tout its medical benefits are correct, there are a few reasons to choose it over your regular over-the-counter topical creams. First, it's hypoallergenic, which means you won't have to worry about having any reactions to it. Another major benefit is that it doesn't promote the growth of bacteria and it also won't clog pores.

Why It Works

Emu oil penetrates the human skin extremely easily, making it very efficient. Part of the reason that it penetrates human skin so easily is its chemical composition. It's made mostly of fatty acids, and those fatty-acid properties are similar to those in humans. The main component, oleic acid, has been known to be used as a local anti-inflammatory. The second most abundant fatty acid in emu oil is linolenic acid, which has been proven to ease muscle and joint pain. It's also rich in antioxidants, which have been proven to reduce wrinkles.

Natural Herbal Products for Skin Irritation

Irritated or damaged skin can be treated cheaply, safely and easily with products you may already have at home. Unlike commercial products that often contain chemicals or artificial fragrances, natural herbal remedies won't further irritate already sensitive skin. Besides providing relief for skin irritations, use of natural herbal products will also give skin a healthier appearance.

Olive Oil
Eczema and psoriasis outbreaks can be soothed using olive oil. Assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, Christopher Dannaker, M.D., advises using one teaspoon of olive oil per one square inch of affected skin. Unlike commercial moisturizers that contain olive oil, pure olive oil contains no chemicals that could further irritate damaged skin.
Mineral Water
Applying a mist or mineral water can soothe burns, rashes or red, itchy skin. Trace minerals in the water act as anti-inflammatories and can provide relief after laser skin resurfacing.

Salt and Neem
Acne can be treated by scrubbing your face with coarse salt and a few drops of neem oil. Salt is a natural antiseptic and neem oil (available at health stores) has antifungal properties. A mask of plain yogurt can be applied afterward for 15 to 30 minutes. The lactic acid in the yogurt acts as an exfoliant and gives skin a natural glow. Yogurt also clears acne, fine lines and discoloration of the skin.
Tomatoes
Vitamins A and C in tomatoes support healthy skin. Tomato juice is a natural astringent and the acidic properties rid the skin of oil. Tomatoes also contain antioxidants that fight free radicals. Use tomatoes daily to rid your skin of acne and blemishes. Liberally apply the pulp of the tomato to your face and rinse off with warm water after one hour.
Crushed Aspirin
Use an aspirin paste to treat mosquito bites. Crush a low-dose aspirin and mix with an ounce of water and apply. Aspirin is a natural anti-inflammatory and reduces redness and swelling associated with bites, stings, acne and ingrown hairs.

Herbal Soap
Soaps containing German chamomile, ginger or echinacea are effective treatments for mosquito bites. These herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that relieve itching and swelling when the soap is rubbed on the bites.

Tea
The phytonutrients in green or black tea work to reduce inflamed blood vessels after a minor burn. Apply by soaking a dish towel in cold tea and using as a cold compress.

Tomato Juice and Buttermilk
Due to the natural cooling effects of each, tomato juice and buttermilk are mixed together to relieve and reduce the effects of sunburn. Mix two teaspoons of tomato juice and four tablespoons of buttermilk and apply. Leave mixture on affected skin for 30 minutes.

How to Maintain Healthy Skin

Your skin; it covers you, you wash it and ,sometimes, it can be one of the most attractive parts of your body. You want to keep your skin looking its best don't you? Reading this article will teach you how to maintain good skin health.

Instructions
1. Avoid smoking. Smoking has a lot of negative health effects on the body, including heart disease and lung cancer among many. However, what most people may not know is that the nicotine in cigarette smoke can cause skin discoloration and, in some cases, acne. In order to maintain good skin health, quit smoking.
2. Consider vitamins A and E. As humans get older, skin begins to lose its firmness because the skin cells, collagen and elastin begin to breakdown, resulting in wrinkles and other skin deteriorations. Taking a vitamin A or E supplement (such as one that contains collagen and elastin) can help protect against this deterioration. Vitamins A or E along with a few other natural minerals have been proven to strengthen the cells of the skin, thus improving the overall appearance of your skin. However, you should never consume dietary supplements before consulting your doctor, especially if you are taking other medications.
3. Avoid the use of oil-based substances on the skin. Oil-based substances clog pores and cause acne. Acne can cause ugly scars, thus taking away from overall skin appearance. When using beauty creams, shop for ones that have no oil and also consider looking at ones that have low or no fragrance to them. If you need further assistance on choosing skin care products, ask your dermatologist for help.

The secrets of skin care in winter

Cold weather, and especially frost with wind, is the serious test for skin. In a fact, our skin withstands very high temperature better than low one. That’s why we need to care about skin more carefully in winter time.

You’d better to refuse from washing at all for the period of strong frosts. Use cosmetic milk, facial washes and tonic for morning skin cleaning. Remember the main thing: all these means must be free of alcohol. Even if you have oily skin, frost has already dried a little your skin. That’s why skin doesn’t need in spirit-based means.

Also you should finish the day right too. Removing make-up and making evening skin cleaning, use light means, which do not destroy skin’s natural protective barrier (this barrier protects skin and also kills bacteria and microbes on it). Such means, for example, are cosmetic milk, any vegetable oil, soft tonics and lotions, which have many moistening components.

The law of winter skin care is skin nourishing in the evening and moistening in the evening. It is so, because moisture, contained in any cosmetic cream, turned into small ice crystals.

There is one secret, which will let you to avoid this law. Put one thin layer of night cream under day moistening cream. In this care moistening components "covered" with day cream layer. They do not contact with air and have enough time to reach inner skin layers before going in the street. Actually, wait for 30 minutes or better an hour after applying a cream on the skin.
